Three weeks ago today our little boy was born! Hard to believe it's already been three weeks. He is such a sweet little guy and his big brothers adore him. Owen loves to put his binky in and comes over to him saying how cute he is. He isn't a huge fan of holding him and told him the other day "Isaac! Stop crying!!" Spencer is a great helper and loves to hold him. He tries to make him laugh and thinks its funny to do crazy things for him. I am sure he's laughing inside and someday we will be able to hear it.
Big brother for a second time!
I think this is one of two times Owen has ever held Isaac. Which is probably better because when he is done he doesn't give any warning before pushing the baby off and trying to get up.
All four of my handsome boys!
Birth Story:
Isaac was born Tuesday morning at 10:26am. He was 8 lbs 5 oz and 20 inches long. My mom was flying in that day at 5pm and I was scheduled to be induced Wednesday morning. Owen was 9 days late and I still had to be induced. I wasn't sure I wanted to wait 9 days again and didn't want my mom to have to go back home before I even had the baby, so we decided to schedule an induction for my due date.
I didn't anticipate going into labor on my own. It's what I prefer obviously, but after Owen I figured I'd always be past my due date. I even flew up to Salt Lake 3 weeks before I was due for my Grandpa Burkinshaw's funeral. It was so nice to be there for it though. And Isaac's middle name (Robert) is my Grandpa's name.
Anyway, the boys and I went to one last (crazy) appointment Monday morning. I was dilated to a 3 with not too much else going on. That day I was having some contractions on and off but nothing too serious. But I woke up Tuesday morning around 1:30am. I was definitely feeling contractions and they were pretty regular. I decided to take a shower and get everything ready to go to the hospital. After getting ready I started having doubts about if I was actually in labor and was stressing a bit about sending the boys to someones house so early - since my mom wasn't in town yet. So I sat on the couch for a while timing my contractions. They were getting more painful and so we finally decided around 5am it was time to go. I also tested positive for group B strep and needed to have the antibiotics 4 hours before I delivered so that was another motivation to get going. I called my visiting teacher and she came over to our house to wait for the boys to wake up and we were off to the hospital. I was not too impressed with the hospital we went to. It took an hour after getting there for them to check me and get the antibiotics started. After telling them multiple times that I had group B strep and my labors were usually pretty fast. It was a little after 7 that they finally started the antibiotic. There was a c-section at 7 so I had to wait to get an epidural. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get one in time. Bryce kept telling me how great I was doing and that I could do it without an epidural. I actually considered it for a little bit. While I was waiting they gave me some pain medicine. As soon as she put it in through my IV I started feeling dizzy and a little loopy. It was so weird! I was dilated to an 8 and still no epidural. I was really thinking maybe I can do this when the anesthesiologist came in. Sweet relief! :) It was the best epidural I have had so far. I could still actually move my legs and felt the pressure everyone has always talked about. After getting the epidural my contractions were getting really strong and soon I was dilated to a 10. They wanted to have me wait since it hadn't been 4 hours since starting the antibiotics. So we waited. The baby's heart rate started doing funny things but they still wanted us to wait. And then a little after 10 my water broke. And there was meconium in the amniotic fluid - which is a sign that the baby is in distress. And they still wanted me to wait to start pushing!?! Mind you there is still a good half hour before they can start the second dose of antibiotic 20 minutes early. There was no way the baby was going to wait around for that. So the nurse got the doctor and after a few pushes our nameless child was born! We didn't decided on his name for a good 24 (probably more) hours after he was born. I thought he looked a little purple and it took him longer than I thought it should to start crying. But thankfully he was fine and had no complications from the strep B or anything else. He was great in the hospital. Was a good eater and slept a lot, even with all the poking and prodding from nurses every few hours. We were ready to go home when it was time! (I probably missed some details - it's late and I can see my sleep time slipping by!)
Naming Isaac was not an easy thing for us. I decided next time we are for sure picking a name before we get to the hospital! It's funny to me the names we have picked. None of them were names I ever thought I would use. But they are all ones we have loved and fit our boys perfectly. So after a lot of talking and thinking we finally decided on Isaac Robert Wright. And although I still sometimes catch myself calling him baby Owen, it is the perfect name and we are in love with our little Isaac!
